Mark's Shack

It all starts out with the right place

Especially since this 60 x 120 sand box only cost me $9,000. Labor Day 1993, soon to be cleared and the debris hauled away........

The first floor frame

Decisions needed to be made, such as how high should the first floor ceiling really be ?

The first floor

Piece by piece the floor goes in.......

The garage

This was the natural place to begin laying out the floor....

The entry way

I slapped up some bricks to beef up the foundation near the front door....

The subfloor goes on

The frame could collapse at any moment ? it's really these floor panels that add rigidity to the structure.......

Siding and windows

The fall of 1994 was spent outside nailing siding and windows to the exterior of the shack.......

The front door

It's 350 pounds of mild stainless steel welded from behind from hundreds of small pieces cut to fit. An inch thick steel table 5 feet by 10 feet was constructed to straighten the door out diring the welding process. And yes that's an official Guy Fauwkes dummy that still lives out in the front yard, a favorite of the neighborhood kids.......

Wood structure for a domed ceiling

Using some nail board, similar to truss joints, this cob webb looking like structure was built on the ground in two pieces and raised into place, by myself with using a couple of ropes.......

The anatomy of a curved ceiling

This curve always reminded me of the a piece of the Enterprise.....

The first floor of glass blocks

The floor is micaceous slate that glows silver and gold.......

Framing the curves

Just a few days ago, this was one giant empty space.......

Ready for the cedar ceiling

The curved sheetrock is easier than you think.......

Taking a break

All of this construction going on has attracted many visitors, making me take a quick break.......

Frame from the master bedroom

This is certainly my favorite wall in the house, it's got lots of possibilities.....

The flooring goes in

The curves are a feature everyone should have in their square house......

Fresh glass blocks

Each one of those cost as much as one lunch.....

Walkway to the deck

The curved railing I welded in place.......

Entry way ~ right

Some cedar toungue and groove I've had stashed away for years.......

Bathroom

An old claw foot tub I bought for $100.......

Rusty old front door

Doesn't it have a welcome home feeling.......

Location map

1000 feet from the surf, near the edje of the tsunami inundation area.......

Dead whale 2002

The first dead whale to wash-up on the beach in front f the house.......
